credit outside the major

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary field, and undergraduate and graduate students can gain a greater depth of understanding and a wider range of skills by taking electives outside their major. Most environmental science electives are upper division electives.

undergraduates:

Undergraduate students are required to take a specified number of approved electives. Electives may be taken in or outside the major department. Some departments have a list of specific courses that can be taken as electives, and the elective requirements and restrictions vary among departments. Please refer to the current Cal State University catalog for additional information. Students should always see their advisor before choosing courses!

department degree max number of electives outside the major (quarter units)
biology B.S. 12 units with approval of advisor / department.
chemistry B.S. Contact your advisor or the department.
geography B.A. Contact your advisor or the department.
geology B.S. 4 units in the sciences with advisor / department approval.
math B.A./B.S. 8 units with advisor / department approval.
civil engineering B.S. 4 units from related fields with advisor / department approval

upper division electives:

The Department of Biology and Microbiology has an extensive list of courses which may be used as electives for Biology undergraduates. For a list electives that biology undergraduate students can take within the biology department see the current University catalog or contact the department. The electives that biology undergraduate students can take outside the biology department are listed below.

In general, when you choose your 32 units of upper division biology electives, select them based on interests and career goals. Think about what you want to do after you graduate before you start taking these electives because certain courses are more helpful in specific career goals.

This list may be updated by the department on an annual basis if other non-biology courses are approved by the entire department faculty. Most of these courses have prerequisites. Refer to the current Cal State, L.A. University Catalog and consult with the instructor of the course to determine if you may enroll without the prerequisites.

You should always see your advisor before choosing your courses!
