living in Los Angeles: campus life and diversity

|Cal State, Los Angeles| campus living | academic resources | maps | diversity |

Located five miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the green hilltop campus has a suburban feel, yet serves one of the most diverse urban populations in the world. Cal State L.A. (http://www.calstatela.edu) is an especially good site for advanced training in environmental science. The University has made conscious and consistent efforts to hire talented faculty in this area, to recruit underrepresented students, to support team research that involves undergraduates as well as graduate students, to improve its facilities and to reconfigure its curriculum. More than two dozen four-year colleges and universities are within a 30 mile radius of campus, and numerous federal, state and private environmental research laboratories operate in the region. Mountain forests, chaparral, deserts, grasslands, and coastal habitats surround the metropolitan area, providing for an urban-wildlands interface as diverse as the people inhabiting it.
