Our research requires data acquisition and analysis with advanced instrumentation. On-campus facilities include a DNA sequencing facility, several complete environmental chemistry laboratories, a marine aquatics laboratory, greenhouses, machine shops, and the Virtual Center for Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing. The computing facilities are linked with the laboratories of the individual CEA-CREST research teams by the campus-wide system of fiber optics and high-speed servers. This infrastructure supports studies in remote sensing, Geographical Information Systems, chemical analysis of pollutants, simulation modeling, molecular genetics, and spatial statistics.

Field studies take place at diverse locations: the watersheds of the Santa Monica Mountains, the streets of urban Los Angeles, the rocky shores of the Pacific Northwest, the tundra of Alaska, the coral reefs of the Caribbean, the California Channel Islands, the deserts of the Southwest.
