research experiences for prospective students

CEA-CREST Research Experiences (CREs) are available to prospective students in order to promote awareness of academic and career opportunities available to students in the area of environmental science. Participants have the opportunity to conduct environmental science research with a designated CEA-CREST faculty member in one of the following areas:

1. Coastal marine population dynamics
2. Monitoring changing ecosystems at multiple spatial scales
3. Molecular genetics in evolution, ecology, and conservation
4. Biogeochemical processes
5. Hydrology of regional aquifers and riparian areas in arid zones

Although CRE's are open to all qualified students, they tend to be awarded to students interested in applying for a full undergraduate or graduate fellowship. Students interested in applying for a CRE must meet the following requirements:

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Have a 3.0 GPA in their last 90-quarter or 60 semester units completed.

The length of CRE is generally one Quarter (8-10 weeks), and they are offered year-round. At the discretion of the faculty advisor and the Program Director, students with a GPA between 2.7 and 3.0 may be accepted. Upon acceptance, local students receive a total stipend of $2,000 disbursed in three payments. Out-of-state students will be provided with additional funds for travel and lodging.

how to apply for a CRE:

1. Complete and submit an Intake Form (available online), and submit it to the CEA-CREST office.
2. Interview with a faculty member regarding placement in their lab.
3. Submit unofficial transcripts to the CEA-CREST office.
