UMEB:
undergraduate mentoring in environmental biology
Undergraduate
Mentoring in Environmental Biology (UMEB) offers exciting opportunities
for focused and interdisciplinary research in environmental biology.
Student Fellows participate in the program's research teams, the
interdisciplinary curriculum, and the university accredited internships
with off-campus agencies. Students work closely with senior scientist
mentors who guide Student Fellows in designing and implementing
an environmental science research project in one of five areas:
1.
Coastal marine population dynamics
2. Monitoring changing ecosystems at multiple spatial scales
3. Molecular genetics in evolution, ecology, and conservation
4. Biogeochemical processes
5. Hydrology of regional aquifers and riparian areas in arid zones
The
UMEB program at Cal State LA is funded by the National Science Foundation,
and is a sister program to CEA-CREST. UMEB provides generous financial
support of $12,000 per year, plus funds for travel and research
supplies to qualified students. In addition, UMEB offers to promising
undergraduate students:
·
In-depth training in: Math & Simulation Modeling, Geographic
Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, DNA Sequencing, and Spatial
Statistics Analysis
· Academic and career advising
· Opportunities to present research at local and national
conferences
· Field trips
· Specialized environmental courses in Southern California,
Canada, Mexico, and U.S. Virgin Islands
· Internship programs with government and private
agencies
· Graduate school preparation workshops
· Opportunities to attend and participate in seminar
series on environmental science research, and ethics
To
be eligible for a UMEB fellowship, students must be U.S. citizens
or permanent residents, and accepted to Cal State, L.A. with a 2.75
